The Hour of Code is Here!

The Hour of Code is a world-wide movement that takes place annually. It is held during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11) which recognizes the birthday of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper who was a computing pioneer. This year, schools in more than 180 countries are participating and the tutorials that students are watching have been made available in over 45 languages! Check out the world map that shows participation this year! As it says on the Code.org website, "Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early,

students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path."

ESCS is proud to be a part of this grass-roots movement. Our 2nd- 6th grade students participated in the "Hour of Code" during their computer classes this week. They all enjoyed the time they spent working with an assortment of websites as they tried out many tutorials and coding activities. Several students even "designed" their own games! Anybody can learn to code! (Ages 4- 104!) If you'd like your student to continue with his/her coding adventures, bookmark this link! https://code.org/learn You can also download the below information sheet for more information!

    Operation Christmas Child Chapel

Yesterday was our annual Operation Christmas Child Chapel. With the boxes that came in for chapel, and some additional boxes that have come in since, our students/families have brought in 188 shoe boxes for children throughout the world. Thank you for your generosity with these boxes, and we now ask that you join us in praying for those children who receive the boxes- that through the gift of these boxes, they would come to know God's love for them!

In chapel yesterday, students watched the below video about a woman who received a box as a child, and how that gift changed her life. I invite you to watch this moving video that reminds us that "love gives."

Join the Jr./Sr. High Parent Connection!

Calling all servants of the Lord! Would you like to be a part of the team that helps the ESCS Jr./Sr. High campus thrive? Join the Parent Connection! Parent Connection is our campus's Parent Teacher Association, also known as "PC." PC is a group of dedicated parents providing resources and support to all teachers, staff and students. PC addresses topics that are important to parents, teachers, staff, and students. PC also facilitates teacher's appreciation week, fun school activities and events, as well as various fund-raisers. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Jr./Sr High PC please contact Ms.Wright or Mrs. Ruiz. Now is the time! Membership is open and free to all ESCS parents. PC meets every second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm. Your involvement also counts toward your parent hours. We need you! Be a part of the team that helps ESCS thrive. Go Eagles go!

    A Note From the Chairman

Would you like to have our gym named after you or your loved one? Our gym is one of the busiest places at our school. It is used daily for PE classes and our various sports teams for practices and games, on Saturdays by our elementary intramural teams and during the summer for sports camp.

We are in the planning stages of a major remodel of our gym, which would include new flooring, raising the ceiling and expanding the width for more seating. Such an undertaking requires significant finances. If you or your business would be willing to underwrite the cost of this project we would be willing to give "naming rights" for the gym.

If you or someone you know is interested in hearing more about this project, please contact me.

    Sincerely,

    Russ Sturm, Chairman

Please join us in welcoming Mr. Henock Tecleab to the ESCS team as our new Mathematics department teacher. Mr. Tecleab was born in Eritrea, a country located in the horn of Africa. He has over five years of teaching experience and holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathletics from the University of Asmara. Mr. Tecleab is a devoted Christian and family man. October Athletes of the Month

  • High School Girls Volleyball
  • Congratulations to Nailah S. who has been selected as the Athlete of the Month for girls high school volleyball. Coach Ojeda chose her to receive this award because of her work ethic and her role on the team. As a freshman, she has shown great maturity in understanding her role on the team and working hard in every practice to improve. Her dedicated attitude toward improvement provided the opportunity for her to play in one of the most important games of the year. Congratulations Nailah and the whole girls volleyball team!

  • Junior High Boys Flag Football
  • Congratulations to Naashen L. who has been selected as the Athlete of the Month for boys flag football for the month of October. Coach Arnold chose him to receive this award for his outstanding play and leadership thus far this season. He has had rushing touchdowns in every game and does a wonderful job as the anchor of the offense. He is well-disciplined and a team player. He does everything he needs to as a leader. He has also given the team good defensive play this year as he played multiple positions on defense, wherever he was needed! Congratulation Naashen and the whole boys flag football team!

    Jr./Sr High Teamwork in Classrooms!

Mrs. Roy's Junior high Spanish class is doing a group project called: Las Estaciones, which translated in English is called The Seasons. They must present their poster board as a group, and each person in their group must say a sentence in Spanish about the assigned seasons. Wow! what an awesome way to incorporate teamwork into the classroom!

Teachers have planned fun and engaging activities that enhance learning. We are so excited for continued use through the school year! Thanks again to all who raised money in last year's Jog-A-Thon to help us reach this point.

    Disaster Drill

More than 10 million Californians participated in today's "Great California Shake Out" earthquake drill. Both the Elementary and Junior/Senior High Campuses at ESCS also participated in this drill. We had a retired Fire Captain, Greg Ruiz, run a large-scale disaster drill to give both students and staff members practice in evacuation procedures should we experience a large earthquake during school hours. Staff practiced setting up first aid stations, shutting off the water/gas/electricity, returning to the building for search & rescue, and more. Coach Ojeda chose her to receive this award for the leadership and maturity she has shown with the team. Even though she is one of the younger girls on the team, Coach Ojeda has been impressed by the positive example she has set in the areas of work ethic, volleyball skill, and team building. Congratulations Sydney and the whole girls volleyball team!

    Junior High Boys Flag Football

Congratulations to Seth D. who has been selected as the Athlete of the Month for boys flag football during the month of September. Coach Arnold chose him to receive this award because he has been an exceptional captain and leader for the team. He makes sure everyone is doing their jobs on offense. Seth has rushed and thrown several touchdowns this year as well as giving valuable defense at corner back. He has only given up one touchdown this year to the receiver he was defending. Congratulations Seth and the whole boys flag football team!

    Community Service Days

After returning from Jenness Park our high school students spent 2 days blessing our community at various locations. On Thursday some of our students helped clean the Sawmill Flooring Company across the street from our school, others helped clean a parsonage at Living Neighborhood Church (Mrs. Roy's church); while the rest of our students stayed behind at ESCS and helped organize room 113 and cleaned up our book closet. On Friday, some of our students were able to bless the Salvation Army by painting a room for them, others cleaned the First Baptist Church (Mr. Nason's church), and a group continued to finish cleaning the parsonage at Living Neighborhood where a pastor and his wife were due to move in the next day. Thank you to our students for serving our community.

    Fall Fundraiser News- Deadline Extended

The deadline for the Fall Fundraiser has been extended to Monday, October 3! We have heard from a number of families that a little extra time would be helpful. We are excited to hear that so many are participating and selling items, thank you. Orders/money should be turned in Monday, October 3. However, the last day for students to pick up Emoji key chains will be Friday, September 30. Thank you for working with us toward our goal of each student selling at least 10 items.

There are extra packets in the front office if needed!

Also, did you know you can shop online? You can use this link and/or send it to friends and family to use. Your child (and ESCS) still get the credit for all online orders using this link (just make sure to register your child): http://gaschoolstore.com/eTools/1056134.

In addition to the emoji key chains that students can earn for selling items, they also have a few other prize incentives. If students sell 10 items, they get to have lunch with Ms. Manguiat. If they sell 30 items, they get to choose a childcare worker, Mr. Ojeda, or Ms. Manguiat to "PIE" in the face!

    Jenness Park Report

Jenness Park was a success! We're back, refreshed and rejuvenated. This was my first time here, and I absolutely loved the experience. The students and faculty all enjoyed themselves, as they grew closer together with chapel worship and team building activities. The highlight of our retreat was our guest speaker Pastor Eric Myhre, the student ministries director of Sequoyah Community Church. He did an amazing job interacting with our youth by keeping them engaged with various activities. He was able to convey scripture by ministering the word of God in a creative and youthful language. I look forward to next year's spiritual retreat, truly a blessing!

This was a great experience for our students as they consider college opportunities!

  • While Ms. Wright is not new to ESCS, she is new to her role as Junior/Senior High Principal. Ms. Wright joined ESCS last November as one of our 2nd grade teachers. She joined our staff with teaching experience in both the public and Christian schools.

She is currently working toward her Masters Degree in Education and is excited to apply her learning into her new role of Junior/Senior High Principal. Her enthusiasm, organization, and vision for the ESCS Junior/Senior High campus is evident as she has taken on this new role. We look forward to you getting to know her better throughout the year and we welcome her to this new role.

He will spend the mornings in the classrooms to assist teachers. Josh develops great relationships with students and we are excited for him to have the opportunity to get to know more of our students and be involved in the classrooms!

Yesterday, she was transferred into ICU at Richmond Kaiser. Ms. Moore has been a integral part of our ESCS community for years and her love and dedication for each of our students is evident to all. Please join us in prayer for her health and recovery.
