The First Promise

Tony Maxwell

12/6/15

Description:The plan to send a Messiah to fix the problem of the world was not something that God thought up later in history. It was a plan that was before the foundations of the world was laid according to Paul. And in Genesis 3, we see exactly what he meant. God made an important remark to the serpent while he was cursing him. and that remark was a promise that what was broken would not remain that way forever. It is the first promise of the Messiah. It was the first Gospel man heard.

Qadosh

Tony Maxwell

11/22/15

Description:The Lord who makes you holy. One of the greatest commands that God gives his people in both the Old Testament and the New Testament is the command to be holy because God is holy. And yet we have this idea that we are not holy because of what we do, but because God has made us holy. Sometimes, and far too often, we rely upon our own abilities to live holy lives. But we must understand that the only way we are able to do that is through the providence of God. He is the one that makes us holy, set apart, people for his name’s sake.

Rapha

Tony Maxwell

11/15/15

Description:The Lord Healer. The idea of healing when talking about the Lord goes beyond the physical ailments. Psalm 6 is a great Psalm that points this out. The true healing that is needed is the healing of the Soul. And the Lord is able to do that. There are a lot of things in this life that bring pain. Suffering happens because of sin. But no matter how bad the suffering is, God can bring about true healing through what we are facing

Tsidkenu

Tony Maxwell

11/8/15

Description:The Lord Righteousness. No one is like Him. Jesus will say that there is no one who is good not even one. Only the Lord is truly righteous. And while we may do things that are examples of Righteousness, the only way we truly are right in the eyes of God is because He imparts His own righteousness upon us. The idea of being right in the eyes of God is the most significant in the bible. Without being in a right standing, we do not have salvation. So how amazing is it that God is willing to place his own righteousness upon us so that we might be saved?

Ra'ah

Tony Maxwell

11/1/15

Description:The Lord is my shepherd. Of all the motifs of God, This one stands out as the most familiar to Christian readers. It is an idea that will be heavily relied upon by Jesus and the early Christians. And one that we still reference today. Shepherds have some pretty amazing qualities as we can see from the 23rd Psalm. And in the same way, our God is there shepherding us through the paths of life.

Sabaoth

Tony Maxwell

10/25/15

Description:The idea of the Lord Almighty, or the Lord of Host, is a very significant one. In it, we have the idea of the sovereignty of God. He is Lord of all creation. Of the armies of the earth and of the armies of heaven. He is in control. Too many times we try to navigate this world through our own power. But even in the darkest of moments, God is the God Almighty. He is the one that can help us through no matter what we are facing.

Home

Tony Maxwell

8/30/15

Description:Finally after many years of wandering the desert, Israel had finally come to the Promised Land of God. It had been over 40 years since they left Egypt. They had faced many trials along the way. They had been punished for their unwillingness to follow God’s plan for their lives, but now they were here. In the Christian life you’re either an overcomer of you’re overcome, a victor or a victim. After all, God didn’t save us to make statues out of us and put us on exhibition. He saved us to make soldiers out of us and move us forward by faith to claim our rich inheritance in Jesus Christ. Moses said it perfectly: “He brought us out… that he might bring us in”. Too many of God’s people have the mistaken idea that salvation is all that’s involved in the Christian life, but salvation is only the beginning. There remains very much land yet to be possessed.

The Rebellion

Tony Maxwell

8/23/15

Description:At Kadesh-Barnea, the people of Israel foolishly forfeited their opportunity to enter the Promised Land and claim their inheritance. Israel’s downfall at Kadesh is a reminder to us today that it’s a dangerous thing to trifle with the will of God. You may end up spending the rest of your life wondering around. In spite of what some of our hymns declare, Canaan is not a picture of heaven. Rather, Canaan is a picture of the inheritance God has planned for each of His children today, the work He wants us to do, and the places He wants us to occupy. The Lord has a perfect plan for each of His children, but we can claim these blessings only by faith and obedience.

The Escape

Tony Maxwell

8/16/15

Description:The scene at the Red Sea was another amazing series of events. In it, we see God perform all kinds of wondrous things to protect his people. This series of divine miracles was certainly a revelation of the greatness and power of God, His faithfulness to His promises, and His concern for His people. Future psalmists would extol the Lord for his mighty works at the Red Sea.

Freedom

Tony Maxwell

8/9/15

Description:Israel’s exodus from Egypt is mentioned many places in Scripture as the greatest demonstration of God’s power in the history of Israel. The prophets point to the exodus as proof of God’s love for Israel. They also refer to the exodus when they speak about the Jews’ deliverance from Babylonian captivity. Isaiah promises a future regathering of Israel to their land and compares it to the exodus. In the Passover event, we see the final demonstration of God’s power.

I Am

Tony Maxwell

8/2/15

Description:Two Key things can be taken from this passage. First, God knows us better than we know ourselves, so we must trust Him and obey what He tells us to do. When we tell God our weaknesses, we aren’t sharing anything He doesn’t already know. The Will of God will never lead you where the power of God can’t enable you, so walk by faith in His promises. Secondly, This is the first time that God declares who he is: I AM. This revelation of who God is to Moses will be key throughout the rest of the Bible. God is. He wasn’t created. He didn’t just appear. He Is and always has been and always will be. Because of that, we can have faith that he will lead us in the right way to go.

Big Forgiveness

Ken Mantle

7/26/15

Description:A look at the Forgiveness that Joseph displayed to his brothers.

A Big Test

Tony Maxwell

7/19/15

Description:God asked Abraham something extreme. He asked that Abraham sacrifice his only son, Isaac. And it seems that without hesitation, Abraham did just that. In Hebrews 11, we are told that Abraham had such faith in the words of God that he knew even if he killed Isaac, Isaac would come back to life. The story of Isaac and Abraham is a story that represents what Jesus would do many years later. That what God was asking Abraham was nothing more than what He had already promised to do. And the sacrifice that would take place on Calvary would be for the salvation of the world.

A Big Promise

Tony Maxwell

7/12/15

Description:God had been working in history for a long time. A long time back, God had promised Eve that someday someone would come and fix what had been broken. And in Genesis 12, God had found the man to start the process with. The promise that was given to Abraham was one that showed the importance of faith. Paul will later write that what saves a person is faith like Abraham displayed because of the blood of Jesus. Do we have faith like Abraham?

Water Damage

Tony Maxwell

7/5/15

Description:Mankind finally had reached a point of no return in the eyes of God. The bible even says he regretted making humans in the first place. But there was one man who was different. And in that one man, God decided to start over. The story of the flood teaches us that sin has consequences. Sometimes just for us. Sometimes for mankind as a whole. But there are consequence. But even in the consequences of life, there is hope of restoration in a relationship with God.

A Big Problem

Tony Maxwell

6/28/15

Description:Genesis 3 tells about a big Problem. And the name of the Problem is Sin. Since the time that Eve and Adam first ate of the forbidden fruit, sin has existed in humans. And because of that, the world has been broken. But even in the midst of that brokenness, God had a plan to fix what was broken. The Problem was already being dealt with. And in Genesis 3, we see a promise of a brighter future.

Created for a Reason

Tony Maxwell

6/21/15

Description:Genesis 1-2 give us two different accounts of Creation. One is very broad in scope, while the other deals specifically with what God did after creating the first man. But in these stories, we see something very important. We were created for a reason. In this life, we like to ask this question: Why are we here? It is foundational to our existence. And while there is a broad understanding of that for mankind as a whole, it is also an important question to ask on an individual level. Why am I here? We have been created for a Reason.

Sufficient Relationships

Tony Maxwell

5/31/15

Description:How often do we live with perfect relationships? Maybe it is our familial relationships that are estranged. Or maybe it is with friends or co-workers or even our bosses. All of life is about how we relate with other people. Paul, when talking about relationships, deals with it in the context of Christ. And ultimately, if we treat others like Christ treated them or as if we were dealing with Christ, then even our relationships will be affected for the better.

Sufficient Mindset

Tony Maxwell

5/24/15

Description:When it comes to overcoming sin in our lives, we strive to do a lot of different things. We even make up rules in the church in an effort to ward off sin. And we expect all to follow by these rules. We focus on right behavior without really addressing the real problem. Paul though starts off with the heart of the issue. How we think matters, and what we think about matters. And if we will think about Heavenly things, living life on earth becomes easier.

Sufficient Salvation

Tony Maxwell

5/17/15

Description:Many times we search for things to make us better people. We work out to have a better body. We work hard to have a better paycheck. We do things that we think will make us more attractive to other people. We want people to like us, so we put on a facade. As christians, we do this also with how we treat God. We strive to become better people in an effort to make God happy with us. But in reality, if we are in Christ, we have all we need. He is sufficient.

Sufficiency of Christ

Tony Maxwell

5/10/15

Description:Paul starts off his letter talking about who Jesus is. This passage of scripture is deep in its thought process. But ultimately what Paul is getting at is this: Through Christ, we have peace. Many times the thing that we are really searching for in this life is peace. Peace with ourselves. Peace with the world. In Christ, we find that. He is sufficient.

To Pray

Tony Maxwell

5/3/15

Description:With the success of Daniel, others were jealous. In seeking a way to get rid of Daniel, their only strategy is to turn his faithfulness to God. They then trick the king into decreeing that no one could pray to anyone except the king, or face death. But Daniel still prayed like normal. In our lives, are we willing to be committed to prayer to the point that we are willing to die for the right to pray? Is Prayer that important to us? Because if we will pray, maybe then all these other things will be that much easier to do.

To Be Found Faithful

Tony Maxwell

4/26/15

Description:During a great feast, mysterious words were written on the wall, but none could understand the meaning behind it. Ultimately, Daniel interpreted them. And their meaning was that of being judged and found wanting. The problem with following the way of the world is this: when we do, we are found wanting in the eyes of God. The way of the world is not how we are to live. We are to be different. Will we be found faithful?

To Not Bow Down

Tony Maxwell

4/19/15

Description:Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego found themselves in a tough situation. As leaders of Babylon, they were required to do what the king asked of them. But what if what they were asked to do went against God. Should they follow the crowd? This world is full of crowd mentality on what is right and wrong. And if we will allow ourselves to follow those same crowds, we can find ourselves in a place where we are just bowing down to the next idol in the world.

To Not Defile

Tony Maxwell

4/12/15

Description:The four men that were whisked away to a foreign land were given the option to eat from the very best of food. But seeing the food reminded them of the commands of God. And with no one to guide them in the right thing, they made the decision to not be defiled by the things presented to them. There are a lot of distractions in this world that people gladly participate in. But many of the things are things that can defile us as Christians. Are we resolved to live a lifestyle that is different than the rest of the world to be blameless before the Lord that saved us?

The Debtors

Tony Maxwell

4/5/15

Description:The story of the cancelled debt is a story that Jesus told a pharisee named Simon. While eating with him, a woman comes and starts to wash Jesus’ feet. Simon gets upset because of the woman’s past. Jesus then tells the story to show the fact that grace can be given no matter what has happen in their life. The entire point of the life of Jesus was to provide men and women with a cancelled debt. Our sins had separated us from God, and the debt was more than we can bear. But through the Death, Burial and Resurrection of Christ, we have have been forgiven our debts. We have grace.

The Lost Things

Tony Maxwell

3/29/15

Description:In Luke 15, Jesus tells three stories about lost things: Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, Lost Son. In all three, there is celebration when the lost item is found. But in the Lost Son story, there was one who did not celebrate. The world we live in is lost. And we have an obligation to seek and to save that which was lost. And when those things that were lost have been found, we should celebrate no matter who it is! Rather than being sour like the oldest son.

The Workers

Tony Maxwell

3/22/15

Description:The Parable of the workers tells the story about a man going out at different times of the day and hiring new workers. At the end of the day though, he gives to each of the men the same amount of money, no matter how long he had work there. To some of the workers, this seemed unfair. This is a story about the Kingdom of God. While it may seem unfair in our eyes that all are treated the same by God when it comes to how he gives out salvation, ultimately what matters is not how long you have done kingdom work, but the fact that you are in the kingdom.

Wilderness

Tony Maxwell

3/1/15

Description:Saul’s threat on David’s life left David to wander the Desert with only those who were close to him. He could not go home for fear of Saul. And for a number of years, David found himself fleeing even in the wilderness from Saul. But on multiple occasions, when faced with an opportunity to get rid of the threat, David spared his adversary. At times in our lives, we can find ourselves in the wilderness. Friendless. Homeless. Lost. But David’s ability to remain calm and to seek the Lord in those times is what got him through. And when we seek the Lord, we can get through those times as well.

Friendship

Tony Maxwell

2/22/15

Description:David’s and Jonathan’s relationship is one of the best friendships found in the Bible. Even though David was to be the next king and Jonathan, the prince, was not, this did not stop them from having a very close, intimate relationship. And when David’s life was in Danger, Jonathan went to great lengths to ensure David’s safety. Do we have this type of friendship with our friends? Or do we merely have a close acquaintance? David and Jonathan show us that we can have the closest of friendship in the worst of circumstances.

Faith

Tony Maxwell

2/15/15

Description:The Story of David and Goliath is a story of David’s extreme faith. While everyone else cringed in fear of this giant, David did the one thing that he could. He could not stand by and allow this man to insult his God. And so he stood up for his faith, despite all the reasons not to. In our lives, our faith can come under attack. The world is not what it once was. While it was once expected of people to go to church and be a Christian, Christians now find themselves in the minority and are expected to keep quiet about their faith. What are we to do when the Giants challenge our God?

Workplace

Tony Maxwell

2/8/15

Description:Shortly after being anointed, David enters into Saul’s service as a musician. Saul had no idea that David was to be the next king. And while David did know, it did not keep him from doing his best at his job. Many times life at work is hard. It is difficult to navigate the many ins and outs that accompany our work life. And there are times when we feel like we should not give it our all. But our workplace is a part of who we are and our calling from God. As such, we should seek to do our best despite the circumstances we find ourselves in.

Calling

Tony Maxwell

2/1/15

Description:David received his calling from the great prophet Samuel. Samuel, the same guy that had anointed the first King of Israel anointed David as the next. David had purpose from God. In our lives, we have a calling. In Ephesians, we read that as Christians we are God’s workmanship created in Christ to do good works. Those things that God has planned for us to do, they are our calling. And our focus should be on them.

Be Wise

Tony Maxwell

1/25/15

Description:First Kings 3 tells an interesting story. God asks the newly crowned king what one gift he would love to have. Rather than asking for riches or great power, Solomon asks for wisdom. To which, God was very pleased. As Leaders, we need to learn to be wise in the things that we are doing. For the lack of wisdom brings a lot of problems in the people and things we are leading.

Be Patient

Tony Maxwell

1/11/15

Description:Moses did everything that God was wanting him to do. He had led the people out of Egypt. He brought them to the Mount Sinai where God appeared in a cloud of fire and smoke. But it seems that no matter what he did, the Israelites complained constantly. Throughout most of his life, Moses showed great patience with the complainers. And on several occasions, even prayed for God to spare them. As Leaders, we need to learn to have patience even with those who are unbearable.

Be Compassionate

Tony Maxwell

1/4/15

Description:The story of Ruth introduces us to a man by the name of Boaz. Boaz was a leader in his community. He owned a lot of land that people from the local town would come out and help with. But what we notice the most about Boaz’ leadership is that he knew his people. When Ruth comes to help, Boaz recognizes that she is new. And Boaz takes the time to figure out who she is and why she is there. And when he finds out her story, he shows compassion for her. Leaders are men and women who have compassion for those who follow. They know the needs and try to fulfill them as best as they can. This week, we will see how Boaz fulfilled the needs of those following him.

God Gave Himself Up

Tony Maxwell

12/21/14

Description:We will be looking at the ultimate reason for hope and Christmas. The ultimate reason Jesus took on flesh and dwelt among us is because of the sacrifice he would make that would pave the way for the salvation of man.
