Illuminate

Sam Randall

7/3/16

Description:Illuminate 2 Cor 3:11-13, 16-18; Acts 6:5,7,8,15; Acts 7:48, 55 "...everyone in the high council stared at Stephen, because his face became as bright as an angel's." (Acts 6:15) There is a phrase in French, "je nais sais quoi", that attempts to describe a quality that is indescribable. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was so full of the Spirit that God's presence literally shined off of his face. It was a quality that was so strange and indescribable that it caused people to ask, "what is it with that guy?" As we walk the journey of our lives with Jesus, we carry His very presence with us. God's glory will be so luminous that it will cause those around us to say, "there is something different, something indescribable about you.. what is it with you?" And may our answer be, "It is the very presence of God." Come Sunday July 3rd to learn more about Stephen and what it means not only to imitate Jesus but to also carry His very presence.

Yet, life and spirituality does not work that way. In a certain respect, they're a beautiful mess. Ordinarily we avoid messes. They're ugly, they smell and turn us away. But think of mess as the real complexities that come our way, the issues and challenges that come at us from varied directions, and where new life or new growth can come forth out of decay and loss. Perhaps you're in the midst of a mess right now, or you look back on one with deep shame and regret. You begin to believe that you can fix them. With enough effort and enough hours, you think you can clean these up. To Thrive! means to give yourself fully to God because He can take our messes and re-create, re-shape, and re-form something unexpected: beauty. Description:Advent Jer 3:12, 1 John 4:9-10, Matt 11:28, Psalm 121:5-7 Advent is the season of expectation, waiting, and hope. During the four weeks before Christmas, we enter into the rich and compelling story of the faithful people of God as they yearned for a Messiah two millennia ago. In doing so, we encounter our own waiting and hope for the second coming of Jesus. In the weeks before Christmas, shopping, parties, and other activities can crowd out the main point of the season. This series of sermons on Advent will invite us to stop, reflect, and remember just how much we need the Lord, and to be reassured that our Savior, Jesus Christ, came - and will come again.
