How to Grow Our Faith
FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS
Following Jesus means we surrender our lives to the will and example of Jesus Christ. In other words following Jesus really means we learn to say what He would say and do what He would do in every aspect of our lives. Repeating His words and replicating His actions really defines our faith and what it means to be a Christian. See Matthew 6:33; 7:24-27; 28:18-20; John 6:63; James 2:14-26; 1 Peter 2:21.
READ AND STUDY THE GOSPELS (Mathew, Mark, Luke and John)
The Gospels record what Jesus said and the way He acted in all kinds of situations. It is the Gospels that teach about the example of Jesus so we in turn can learn to talk and act like He did.
PRAY
Prayer is both talking to God and listening to Him.
See Matthew 5:5-15; Philippians 3: 4-7; 1 Thessalonians 5:17.
RESIST TEMPTATION AND SIN
Stated simply, sin has a destructive influence on our lives, relationships and our faith. One of the primary decisions a follower of Christ has to make is in direct response to this question, will the consequences of my sin have a greater benefit to me than the consequecnes of obeying God? When we settle this question, temptation is brought into proper perspective and we see how stupid and damaging sin really is in our lives and the Body of Christ. See Romans 6-8; 14:23; Ephesians 6:11-17; Titus 2:12; Hebrews 11:24-26; James 7-10; 1 Peter 5:6-11; 1 John 1:9; 2:1, 12-14; 3:9; Jude 24.
WORSHIP WITH AND LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH WITH THE BODY OF CHRIST
Going to church is all about living in community with other Christians. We help to encourage and strengthen each other’s faith at Church. See Hebrews 10:25.
MEMORIZE AND THINK ABOUT SCRIPTURE
See Psalm 19:7-14; 119:11; John 6:53; 15:1-11; Colossians 3:1-2.
DISCOVER AND USE YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFT
God gives each Christian a special spiritual gift. This gift is designed to help other Christians become mature followers of Jesus Christ. See Romans 12-14; 1 Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians 4:11-32.
HAVE SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE
If you learn to repeat the words of Jesus and replicate or imitate they way He would act, you will have influence. In fact, you will be the one who sets the example. The ability to be the first one to do what is right is true leadership. Being the first to set the example will distinguish you from other people and these people will see that you can be trusted. Begin to have a ministry of influence by having friendships with integrity. When you prove your integrity with your friends, you earn the right to speak the love and good news of Jesus Christ to them. When this happens, you can help them discover what it means to become a Christian. See Matthew 5:13-16; Philippians 2:12-18; Colossians 4:5-6; 1 Peter 3:13-17.
